Previously one of the most heavily industrialised locations in the world, Mayfield in Manchester is getting a facelift with the area being developed into 6.5 acres of parkland.
Comprising an urban square, open greens for lawn sport and informal play; adventure play areas; floodable meadows and biodiverse ecological areas beside the river; and sheltered structures to ensure it’s a park for all weathers, this will be Manchester’s first city-centre public park. (And the first public park to be created in the city for 100 years.)
Wildflower Turf Ltd has supplied over 2,000m² of Wildflower Turf® to the project. Three different types of bespoke turf were specified at the outset and Mayfield Park will pleasingly comprise more wildflowers than lawn!
Mayfield Park’s landscaping will also boast 120,000 plants, 140 trees spread across 58 species and 230 square metres of rain gardens. Designed by Studio Egret West the approach has been ‘nature-first’, with the opening up of the River Medlock creating new riverside habitats and providing a flood plain that can accommodate climate-change scenarios. Hard materials have been either recycled or sourced locally to minimise carbon footprint while maximising local character.
With work still in progress, the transformation is already astounding and Mayfield Park is due to open to the public this coming autumn.
