An Urban Development Regeneration Case Study- Mayfield Park, Manchester
Location: Mayfield Park, Manchester
Product used: Wildflower Turf™ Bespoke
Project Size: 3,000m² Project Overview
Mayfield Park, a 6.5 acre urban oasis in Manchester, serves as a compelling case study in urban regeneration and ecological restoration. This once derelict industrial site was transformed into a vibrant public space that prioritizes biodiversity and sustainability. As part of the UK government’s initiative to refurbish parks in areas of the country with the lowest access to green spaces, the former industrial site in Manchester was redeveloped in an ambitious project across 2021 and 2022.
Before its revitalization, the Mayfield site was characterised by industrial decay and environmental degradation. The area was dominated by abandoned warehouses, contaminated land and a polluted river.
The Solution
A key element of the new design plans for Mayfield Park were to include extensive wildflower meadows. Wildflower Turf Ltd played a crucial role in this regenerative project, supplying 3,000m² of bespoke wildflower turf. Wildflower Turf Ltd carefully crafted three different wildflower turf mixes, designed specifically for the site to significantly contribute to the park’s biodiversity and enhance its aesthetic appeal.
This included a bespoke SuDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage System) turf to revitalize the River Medlock. Working alongside PP O’Connor, our goal was to create an inviting, ecological park that enriched both the community and local wildlife. In addition to the extensive wildflower meadow areas, an urban square, adventure play areas, open greens for lawn sport and informal play were also introduced. Mayfield Park’s redesigned landscape also boasts 120,000 plants, 140 trees and 230m² of rain gardens. The 3,000m² of wildflower turf laid at Mayfield Park provided a beautiful and biodiverse habitat that has helped to dramatically reclaim and regenerate the formerly neglected site. The ecological value of the park significantly increased as the project doubled the green spaces in the area. Wildflower Turf Ltd are proud to have developed and supplied wildflower turf that has restored the landscape and will continue to provide biodiverse benefits year after year.
