Sustainability Rooted in Nature: How Wildflower Turf® Supports Regenerative Landscapes

As the demand for climate resilience and nature recovery grows, sustainable landscaping has never been more important. Green spaces are expected to do more than simply provide visual appeal. They need to support biodiversity, reduce environmental impact, and contribute to long-term ecological health.

At Wildflower Turf Ltd, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. From seed sourcing to soil care, our turf systems are designed to work with nature and deliver lasting benefits for people and the planet.

Grown and Harvested in the UK

All wildflower seed used in Wildflower Turf® is grown and harvested in the UK, across our sites in Hampshire, Shropshire, and Yorkshire. This approach supports lower transport emissions, greater seed traceability, and improved plant performance in local conditions.

Using UK-grown seed also helps safeguard native biodiversity. It ensures plants are suited to the UK’s climate and ecosystems, which in turn supports pollinators, insects, and other wildlife that rely on native species.

“Using locally grown seed is a crucial part of ecological restoration. It not only reduces the carbon footprint of landscaping projects but also strengthens the success and resilience of the habitats we create.”
– Helen Simmen, Head of R&D, Wildflower Turf Ltd

The UK has lost nearly half of its natural biodiversity, ranking among the most nature-depleted countries in the world. Meanwhile, pollinator species like bees and hoverflies have declined by an average of 18% since 1970. These trends highlight the urgent need for habitat creation that is both effective and sustainable.

A Cleaner Approach to Establishment

Conventional turf products often use plastic-based netting, which can leave behind microplastics and interfere with the growth of more delicate plant species. Wildflower Turf® uses a biodegradable, plant-based bio-netting that breaks down naturally over time.

This netting helps wildflowers establish quickly and supports root development without leaving any synthetic residue behind. It also improves installation and reduces long-term waste, aligning with best practices in sustainable landscape design.

Soil Health Comes First

The soilless system used in Wildflower Turf® is carefully developed to avoid disturbing the natural soil environment. By preserving the soil structure and protecting essential microbiomes, we help create a foundation for long-term biodiversity and plant health.

Minimising soil disturbance means there is less need for watering, fewer weeds, and a reduced reliance on fertilisers or chemicals. This leads to landscapes that are more self-sufficient and better suited to long-term environmental goals.

Built for Sustainable Outcomes

Wildflower Turf® is designed to support meaningful environmental progress. Whether it is used in urban green infrastructure, rural land restoration, or commercial landscaping, it provides a clear route to meeting sustainability goals.

The UK aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 81% by 2035 compared to 1990 levels, but the Climate Change Committee warns the country is currently off track for net zero. With only a third of necessary actions backed by credible plans, land-based solutions like Wildflower Turf® offer a practical and nature-first way to contribute to national climate targets.

Our turf systems help support pollinators, improve soil quality, and reduce inputs like water and chemicals. The result is a meadow that delivers ecological value over time and requires far less intervention.

From seed sourcing to soil safeguarding, our systems are rooted in science and built for the future. Choosing Wildflower Turf® means choosing nature-first, future-ready landscapes.
