Set to open in December 2018, London’s ambitious Crossrail project promises to deliver a high frequency, high capacity service to make travelling in the capital quicker and easier.
Overlooked by high-rise developments and next to the River Lee, the Limmo peninsula was Crossrail’s primary worksite for their eastbound tunnel boring machines, and the area adjoins Canning Town Tube and Docklands Light Railway station.
Having previously supplied turf to the Crossrail worksite around Mile End in 2015, Wildflower Turf Ltd were contacted in 2017 and asked to assist with the enhancement of the Limmo Peninsula Crossrail site.
Working with landscaping partner Turney Landscapes Ltd, Wildflower Turf Ltd was commissioned by CSJV – the Costain Skanska Joint Venture responsible for turning the former construction site into the permanent Elizabeth line access shaft – to provide a biodiverse solution that would be both aesthetically pleasing while also ensuring a long-term habitat for wildlife.
Turney Landscapes installed 2,600m² of Wildflower Turf Ltd’s Roof Turf (made up of over 35 wildflowers and grasses native to the UK) across and down the sloping 8-metre-high exit shaft in March and April 2018.
Key project challenges centred around strict logistical requirements, adherence to specific delivery timelines, and the sloping nature of the installation site itself.
Turney Landscapes took great care to ensure the turf was well irrigated and were rewarded with some lovely spring and early summer results.
