Bulbs

Bees & Butterflies Summer Scatter Mix

This colourful bulb mix works beautifully with both the more subtle native wildflower Landscape 34 turf and the more colourful Native Enriched Turf.

The bulbs have been selected specifically for their appeal to both bees and butterflies and is a wonderful top up within a wildflower nectar bar during the summer months.

This selection of bulbs starts to flower in May through to August and all will grow to a substantial height that sees their flowers at the same level or slightly above the main flowering layer of the turf at that time. The tall straight stems provide an interesting structural perspective against the more wispy nature of the wildflowers and provides a lovely design juxtaposition for artistic landscapes. This selection of bulbs will also work in conjunction with the Spring scatter mixes and ideally you could lay both types together for a succession of structure and colour.

Please note these bulbs are AVAILABLE TO PURCHASE AND INSTALL SEPTEMBER TO DECEMBER.

Naturalising Spring Scatter Mix

This mix has been specifically chosen to mirror the classic naturalised spring bulbs that are seen up and down the country.

With a mix of scilla, chionodoxa, fritillary and narcissi, the colour palette is ‘Cool Spring’, with a mix of creams, pale blues and purples and works particularly well with our Landscape Turf and Shade Tolerant Turf. The bulbs will provide flowers from February to late April and are suitable for sunny and part shade areas.

Vibrant Spring Scatter Mix

This mix has been specifically chosen for the fabulous colour combination to bring wildflower borders to life earlier in the year.

We believe this mix will be particularly useful if you are creating an area that frames a lawn or is in an area of public use. This lovely selection of bulbs has been chosen with consideration to their height, colour and flowering time to provide impact and drama and are a perfect accompaniment to our Wildflower Landscape Turf and Native Enriched Turf. Tulips, narcissi and crocus are bold choices but never disappoint with their instant cheer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What preparation is required to install Wildflower Turf®?

Fully clear the area of weeds and vegetation, rotovate to a depth of 100mm, rake off large stones, leave as a fine tilth ready for the turf to be laid.

What is the timeframe to a full flowering wildflower space?

2-3 months if installed in spring or summer.

How much sunlight does the area need?

Our wildflower mixes all need at least 3-4 hours of dappled sunlight during the summer months, with more sunlight being ideal. This can vary slightly depending on the specific mix, so contact us for more information.

Can I visit and see the Wildflower Turf® before buying?

Unfortunately, no. Due to safety concerns with heavy machinery, our farms are not open to visitors. We’re happy to answer questions by email or call and can explain what to expect upon delivery. We also hold free open days annually at our Hampshire growing site where you can see and learn about the products, as well as have a tour of the farm.

My turf arrived with moss. Is that normal?

Yes, this is completely normal! The wildflowers will outcompete the moss as they establish themselves. You can watch a video showing this process here.

Which mix is best for shaded areas?

We recommend considering what currently grows in the area. If grass struggles to survive, wildflowers may as well. We do have a Shade Tolerant mix available, however it still needs at least 3-4 hours of dappled summer sunlight. For further advice contact our advisors on 01256 771 222.

How much water does newly laid Wildflower Turf® need?

Newly installed turf needs daily watering for the first 2-3 weeks, assuming there’s no rain. After that, it rarely needs watering except during extended droughts (several months without rain). Even then, occasional soaking is sufficient. Overwatering can encourage grass growth.

Can Wildflower Turf® be used on slopes?

Yes! Our turf can be used on various inclines, even walls. However, the area still needs to be accessible for maintenance, and additional watering might be required. We offer biodegradable pegs to help secure the turf while it establishes.

Why are there gaps in my new Wildflower Turf® delivery?

Young Wildflower Turf® intentionally has an open sward to allow the wildflowers room to grow. Wildflowers aren’t the best competitors, so this initial openness is normal. The best way to assess the turf’s health is to check the root system. You might see some plants at the rooting stage that haven’t emerged above the surface yet. These gaps are beneficial for the meadow’s success, allowing for greater species diversity.

When is the best time to install Wildflower Turf®?

Our Wildflower Turf® can be installed anytime throughout the year, as long as the ground isn’t frozen, flooded, or covered in deep snow.

Why Choose Wildflower Turf?

Changing colours throughout the year can be achieved with Wildflower Turf allowing for the creation of stunning wildflower meadows. The flowers in the turf mixes have been carefully chosen to produce flowering plants from early in the spring through to the middle of the autumn.

The grasses in the mix are native to the British Isles and are chosen to complement the flowers and not to compete with them, which is a common problem with conventional “wildflower plugs” or wildflower seeding. This allows the flowers to succeed rather than be swamped by the grasses, which is a common problem with conventional soil based Wildflower Turf or most wildflower seeding. The grasses are visually attractive while they seed, alongside the wildflowers, and the combination provides a food source for birds and a favourable habitat for butterflies and other insects.
